Cycle expedition to world’s highest polling station

Date:

Himachal Pradesh Chief Electroal Officer Maneesh Garag on Tuesday flagged off a cycle expedition that will scale the world’s highest poling station, Tashigang, at an altitude of 15,256 feet above sea level.

The spokesperson for the State Election Department said State Election Icon Jaspreet Paul is leading the team, and the purpose of the expedition is to make people, especially youth, aware of their right to vote.

The flag-off took place around 8 am from the Ridge Ground here.

There has been a call for boycott of the Lok Sabha polls and assembly bye elections recently, as the voters were not happy with the performance of MLA Ravi Thakur and the central government.

The officials of the district administration have already conducted a round of talks with the Tashigang polling station voters. It falls under the Spiti division of Kullu district.

People who belonged to the Spiti Valley boycotted the former MLA and Minister during the COVID pandemic. The state election department is mainly trying to increase the polling percentage, where during the previous LS and assembly elections polling percentages were below 75 percent.

During the last phase of the election on June 1, as many as 55,56001 electorates, including 28.07 lakh males, 27.48 lakh females, and 36 transgenders, were eligible for the polls. Populationwise, there are around 14.68 lakh electorate in Kangra paralimentary constituency, 13.46 lakh in Mandi, 14.11 lakh in Hamipur, and 13.29 lakh in Shimla PC.

Interestingly, Lahaul Spti is a small assembly constituency, as there are only 2,5043 voters.
