Agartala, 26th June 2024:   In a significant development, Agartala Government Railway Police (GRP) arrested an Indian broker along with four Bangladeshi women at Agartala railway station on Tuesday. The incident sheds light on the ongoing issue of illegal immigration and human trafficking in the region.

According to sources, Bangladeshi citizens frequently cross the India-Bangladesh border fence, facilitated by Indian and Bangladeshi brokers. Despite efforts by the Border Security Force (BSF) and the intelligence wing of the police, these brokers continue to operate with impunity. The illegal immigrants then travel to different parts of India via rail.

The arrested Bangladeshi women—Mim Sultana, Rubaya Sultana, Ritu Begum, and Jyoti Khatun—had entered Tripura illegally. Two of them were bound for Pune, while the other two were headed to Ahmedabad. Their journey was orchestrated by the Indian national, Mohammed Kasem Miah, who hails from Sipahijla district. Miah’s role involved assisting Bangladeshi women both in entering and leaving the state.

Agartala GRP police have registered a case against the arrested individuals. They were subsequently presented before the court on Wednesday. This incident highlights the active human trafficking ring operating within the state, despite previous efforts by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to prosecute traffickers.
