Agartala, 29th August 2024:  The Left Students’ and Youth Organization commemorated the Martyrdom Day of five valiant figures who laid down their lives in the fight for democracy and justice. The ceremony took place at the Chhatra-Yuva Bhavan at Melarmath here, paid homage to Dilip, Tarun, and Arvind, who were martyred during the 1966 food movement, and Rajeshwar Sinha and Sumitra Sinha, who were assassinated in 1990 while defending democratic principles.

The event was attended by prominent leaders including DYFI state Secretary Nabarun Deb, President Palash Bhowmik and SFI state secretary Sandipan Deb among others. The gathering began with a solemn tribute, as participants placed flowers on the martyr’s altar, honoring the courage and sacrifice of these individuals.

Speaking on the occasion, DYFI State President Palash Bhowmik highlighted the significance of August 29th for left-wing student and youth activists. “This day is not just a remembrance but an oath-taking day,” he said. Bhowmik recalled the 1966 food crisis that engulfed the state, leading to a tragic confrontation between police forces and students in Agartala, where Dilip, Tarun, and Arvind were killed in police firing. He also remembered the tragic incident on August 29, 1990, when Rajeshwar Sinha and his wife Sumitra Sinha, members of the undivided Belonia sub-division, were martyred by assailants at their home in Debdaru, Santirbazar sub-division.
