Agartala, 20th March 2025:   Small vehicle drivers from Khowai blocked the alternative national highway in the Dhalabil area this morning protesting against alleged assault and extortion at Agartala’s Radhanagar stand four days back. The road blockade began at 7 am brought traffic to a complete halt.

A protesting driver stated, “We have been facing constant threats from the people managing the Agartala Radhanagar stand. Whenever we pick up passengers in Agartala, they beat us and extort money. We demand justice.”

The protesters alleged that a small vehicle driver from Khowai was recently assaulted and this incident triggered widespread anger among the drivers. To express their frustration, all affected members of the BMS private vehicle workers union participated in the protest, urging immediate action and a fair trial.

The blockade caused significant disruption to traffic flow. On receiving information about the protest, BJP leaders, along with officials from the Khowai police station, rushed to the scene to mediate.

A BMS leader addressed the aggrieved drivers stating, “We understand your concerns and promise a fair and transparent investigation into the matter. Steps will be taken to ensure such incidents do not recur.”

Following this assurance, the drivers agreed to withdraw the blockade, restoring traffic on the highway. The incident has raised serious questions about the safety and rights of small vehicle drivers operating in the area.
