Agartala, 13th March 2025: Allegations have surfaced regarding the illegal filling of the pond covering 7 ‘Gondas’ located adjacent to the Ranibazar police station despite an administrative ban on such activities. This has sparked significant concerns among locals, who warn that the activity poses a serious threat to the environment and violates existing laws.
Local residents claim to have raised the issue with the Deputy Magistrate (DM), Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and local body, but to no avail. “We submitted complaints to all the concerned authorities, yet no action has been taken so far. It’s disheartening to see such blatant disregard for environmental regulations,” a local resident expressed in frustration.
In response to a query of media personnel, a Panchayat official stated, “We have not received any formal information about this matter. However, the Tehsildar is scheduled to visit the area today for an inspection and appropriate measures will be taken accordingly.” The assurance has done little to pacify the locals, who remain skeptical of timely intervention.
The residents further allege that three individuals are openly continuing with the pond filling activities, ignoring protests from the local residents. “The filling of this pond is illegal and environmentally damaging. Urban ponds like Sat Gonda play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance. This activity violates administrative restrictions and threatens the local ecosystem,” said a local environmental activist.
Some conscious citizens of the area have raised pressing questions about the lack of enforcement. “How is it possible for such an activity to continue when there is an official ban in place?” asked a resident. They have urged the authorities to take swift legal action to halt the pond filling and hold those responsible accountable.
