Agartala, 19th March 2025:   The Amra Bangali Party has strongly opposed the construction of a Taj Hotel at Pushpabanta Palace condemning the state government and the Tipra Motha party in a press release issued on Wednesday.

“The destruction of a heritage site linked to the emotions of hill Bengalis and the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore is unacceptable,” the statement read. The party criticized the state government’s decision to allocate ₹258 crore to the ADC for tribal development and provide 200 Tiprasa jobs at the hotel under an MoU with Tata Group.

The Pushpabanta Palace, formerly the Kunjaban Palace was where Rabindranath Tagore stayed during his 1926 visit to Tripura. Built by Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya, the palace was renamed in line with Ujjayanta Palace. In 1941, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya celebrated Tagore’s 80th birthday here. The site, later the state’s Raj Bhavan, was converted into the Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya Museum and Cultural Center in 2022.

“We demand the government construct the hotel elsewhere to preserve our cultural heritage,” the statement added. The party accused the leadership of hypocrisy, stating, “Those who once protested now praise the Tata Group.” The Amara Bengali Dal urged authorities to reconsider the decision in Tripura’s best interest.
