Agartala, 4th May 2024:  Bishramganj Police Station’s diligent efforts culminated in the capture of Sanjit Deb, a fugitive accused in a high-profile NDPS case. Deb was arrested on Saturday afternoon near the Sepahijala ‘Noukaghat’ adjacent to the national highway and marking the end of a 14-day manhunt.

The saga began on April 21, when a confidential informant tipped off the police and TSR forces about Deb’s whereabouts. A coordinated raid was executed at Deb’s residence in the Silotia Mura area of Chechuri Mai gram panchayat under Bishramganj police station. The operation led to the seizure of narcotics, specifically Eskuf cough syrup and Phensedyl, with an estimated street value of Rs 50 lakh. In a dramatic turn of events, Sanjit Deb managed to evade capture by fleeing the premises.

Subsequent to the raid, Shipra Deb, Sanjit Deb’s wife was arrested at the scene along with the recovered drug paraphernalia. She was taken into custody and later presented before the Bishalgarh sub-divisional court on April 22. The court mandated a jail term for Shipra Deb, who remains incarcerated to this day.

Sanjit Deb, however, remained at large, prompting the Bishramganj police to intensify their search. Despite their persistent efforts, Deb proved elusive until his recent arrest. Subimal Debnath, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Bishramganj police station, stated that Deb has been remanded to the Bishalgarh sub-divisional court with a request for a three-day remand.

The arrest has sparked a wave of speculation among local residents, who assert that the Debs’ modest lifestyle is incongruent with the substantial sum of money involved. The police have openly acknowledged the community’s skepticism but remain resolute in their stance against drug-related offenses, vowing to show no leniency towards those implicated in such activities. The Bishramganj police’s commitment to combating drug addiction and its associated crimes remains unwavering, as they continue their vigilant efforts to uphold the law.
