Agartala, 15th May 2026: Tripura is set to get another new TSR force as the Union Ministry of Home Affairs has approved the raising of an Indian Reserve (IR) Battalion in the state. The Ministry conveyed the decision to the Tripura Chief Secretary through a letter issued on May 15.
According to the letter, the President of India has granted approval for the formation of one Indian Reserve Battalion in Tripura. The Union Home Ministry will provide a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50 crore for raising the battalion. In addition, another Rs 30 crore will be allocated for infrastructure development and land acquisition purposes.
The state government has been directed to raise the force in accordance with all prescribed norms applicable to armed forces units. The annual recurring expenditure and the remaining infrastructure-related costs will have to be borne by the state government.
Although the battalion is being created primarily to strengthen Tripura’s security system, as an Indian Reserve Battalion it can also be deployed by the Government of India in any part of the country depending on security requirements.
It may be mentioned that Tripura already has TSR battalions up to the 15th battalion level. At present, there are 13 active battalions, as two battalions had earlier been disbanded. One of the existing units is an all-women battalion. With the formation of the new force, it will effectively become the 16th battalion in the state.
The approval from the Central Government is expected to further strengthen the overall security mechanism of Tripura.
