Agartala, November 18: Tripura witnessed heavy rainfall and strong winds as cyclone Midhili passed over the state on Saturday, causing partial damage to hundreds of houses across all districts. However, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far, according to the state disaster management department.
The department said that a total of 12 houses were completely destroyed, 66 houses were severely damaged and 239 houses were partially damaged due to the impact of the cyclone. The worst affected districts were Unakoti, Dhalai and Gomati, where most of the damaged houses were located.
The district administrations have initiated a compensation survey to assess the extent of the losses and provide relief to the affected families. The state government has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to each family whose house was completely damaged, Rs 50,000 to each family whose house was severely damaged and Rs 10,000 to each family whose house was partially damaged.
The state meteorological department said that the cyclone, which originated in the Bay of Bengal, weakened after crossing the coast of Bangladesh and entered Tripura as a deep depression. It said that the cyclone brought gusty winds of up to 60 kmph and heavy rainfall of up to 100 mm in some places.
The department said that the cyclone has moved away from the state and the weather is likely to improve from Sunday. It advised the people to remain alert and cautious as there may be some isolated showers and thunderstorms in the next 24 hours.
