Agartala, 9th September 2025:   Despite Chief Minister’s repeated warnings against extortion, reports of forced collections continue to surface across Tripura. Today, representatives of the Mazdoor Monitoring Cell, led by its president Biplab Kar, submitted a formal memorandum to the Director General of Police (DGP), demanding immediate intervention against rising incidents of coercion and intimidation.

Speaking to reporters outside Police Headquarters here, Kar alleged that from Dharmanagar in the north to Sabroom in the south, vehicles are being forcibly stopped by various clubs and labour unions. Under the pretext of collecting donations for Vishwakarma and Durga Puja festivities, truck and lorry drivers are reportedly being pressured to pay up. “Those who refuse are being physically assaulted,” Kar claimed, adding that even vehicles are being vandalized in some cases.

The delegation urged the DGP to take swift action to curb such practices, which they say not only flout the Chief Minister’s directive but also threaten public safety and undermine law and order.

The Tripura Police Crime Branch, which investigates extortion and other serious offences, has previously emphasized its commitment to zero tolerance on such matters.
