Kishor Welcomes Enhanced Central Funding Under 16th Finance Commission

Date:

Agartala, 3rd July 2026:  Tripura is set to receive increased financial assistance from the Centre under the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission, a move expected to strengthen the state’s Panchayati Raj institutions and rural development initiatives.

State Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman announced the development after attending the National Workshop on the 16th Finance Commission Recommendations, organised by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on Friday.

Speaking after the event, Barman expressed appreciation to the Central Government for its continued support to Tripura’s rural local bodies. He also thanked Union Panchayati Raj Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh for convening the workshop, which brought together representatives from across the country to discuss the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations.

According to the minister, the revised financial framework introduces a Performance Grant while maintaining an equal 50:50 distribution between tied and untied funds. He said these measures would provide greater flexibility to local bodies and improve governance at the grassroots level.

Barman also noted that Tripura had successfully received its full allocation under the 15th Finance Commission, describing it as a significant accomplishment. He said the state has consistently demonstrated excellence in Panchayati Raj administration, earning several national recognitions, including three National Awards, an e-Governance Award, and seven awards from the Ministry of Panchayati Raj this year. Tripura had secured seven national awards in the previous year as well.

The workshop witnessed the participation of Panchayat ministers from 18 states, along with senior Central Government officials and state representatives.

The minister expressed confidence that the implementation of the 16th Finance Commission recommendations would further modernise Tripura’s three-tier Panchayat system, making it more transparent, technology-driven, accountable, and responsive to the needs of rural communities. He said the initiative would support the state’s vision of building prosperous villages while contributing to the broader goal of a developed India.
