Agartala, 21st November 2025: Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das on Friday said that the state would not suffer any setback even if Bangladesh stops exporting fish to Tripura, as India has sufficient fish production capacity to meet the demand.
Addressing a gathering on the occasion of World Fisheries Day, the minister conveyed his best wishes to fish farmers, acknowledging their vital role in ensuring a steady supply of fish to consumers.
“Today is a day to appreciate the hard work and dedication of our fish farmers. It is because of their continuous efforts that people are able to enjoy fish,” Das remarked. Highlighting the significance of fish in the local diet, the minister noted that almost 98% of Tripura’s population consumes fish.
He pointed out that although the demand for fish has been rising every year, the state is steadily moving toward self-sufficiency. “The demand last year was around 1.20 lakh metric tons, while our production stood at 89,000 MT. The remaining requirement is currently fulfilled through imports from Andhra Pradesh, Bangladesh, and West Bengal,” he said.
Das emphasized that even if Bangladesh withdraws its fish exports, it would not pose a challenge, as India has the capacity to cover the shortage. He added that the government is focused on achieving complete self-reliance in fish production through schemes such as the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Chief Minister Matsya Vikas Yojana, under which several initiatives have already been launched.
