Agartala, January 19: A 12-wheeler oil tanker belonging to Bharat Petroleum lost control and hit a stone-laden vehicle parked in the Shanicherra Bazar area of Bagbasa on the National Highway on Friday. The impact caused both the vehicles to overturn and the oil tanker to burst, spilling oil on the road. The driver of the oil tanker fled the scene after the accident.
The accident disrupted the traffic on the National Highway and created a chaotic situation. The locals tried to collect the oil with buckets, prompting the police to use lathi-charge to disperse them. The District Magistrate North Tripura district Debpriya Bardhan, the North District Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty, the Sub-Divisional Police Officer Soumya Debbarma, the administrative officials from Dharmanagar and the Indian Oil officials reached the spot to assess the damage and control the situation.
The authorities are working to clear the road and restore the traffic. They are also investigating the cause of the accident and the whereabouts of the driver of the oil tanker.
