Agartala, 30th May 2025: Agartala: May 30. Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha today said that a project proposal of Rs 431 crore 71 lakh has been sent to the North Eastern Council to achieve self-sufficiency in milk, meat, and egg production in the state, and also to meet the needs of the North Eastern states.
Dr. Saha said this during a meeting he attended, chaired by Union DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia today In the meeting, the Chief Minister said that a modern animal disease detection lab needs to be set up in the state. He drew the attention of the Union Minister to the need for necessary cooperation to achieve self-sufficiency in milk, eggs, fish, and meat production in the state.Today, the second high-level meeting of the Ministry of Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER) was held under the chairmanship of DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia with a view to making the eight states of the North Eastern region leaders in milk, eggs, fish, and meat production.
During the discussion, the Chief Minister said that the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors have been playing an important role in the economic development of Tripura and in meeting the nutritional needs of the people.He highlighted the average per capita demand, availability, and shortage of milk, eggs, fish, and meat in the state for the financial year 2023–24.Dr. Saha also mentioned various initiatives to increase milk production in the state, such as the application of artificial insemination (sex-sorted semen) method, strengthening of dairy cooperatives, assistance to women animal husbandry farmers in poultry rearing, and support to animal husbandry entrepreneurs under the NLM scheme.

The Chief Minister also stressed the potential of setting up a pig breeding farm and processing unit in the state for breeding high-yielding pig breeds for export to the North Eastern states as well as Southeast Asia.
He stated that in order to achieve self-reliance in fish production in the state, work is being undertaken to expand and renovate water bodies under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana and the Chief Minister Matsya Vikas Yojana.
“In the last 5 years, about Rs 50 crore have been allocated from the state budget for the development of fish farming, and Rs 76.4 crore have been spent from the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana funds. In addition, a project proposal of Rs 816.5 crore has been sent to the North Eastern Council to make the state self-sufficient in fish production as well as to meet the needs of the North Eastern states,” he said.
The meeting was also attended by Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister T. Zeliang, and others.
This meeting, held virtually at the Secretariat, was attended by Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, Secretary to the Chief Minister Dr. P.K. Chakraborty, Secretary of the Planning Department L.T. Darlong, Secretary of the Fisheries and ARD Department Deepa D. Nair, Director of the ARD Department Neeraj Kumar Chanchal, and others.
