Agartala, 2nd June 2026: Rural development projects across ten panchayats in Amarpur have come to a standstill, sparking outrage among local leaders. For the past three months, villagers have been deprived of essential administrative services, with government projects reportedly halted. The continuity of the state government’s development agenda has now come under serious question.
On Tuesday, a group of ten panchayat chiefs and deputy chiefs confronted Block Development Officer (BDO) Sanjib Debnath in his office, demanding answers over the suspension of services. Witnesses say the meeting quickly escalated into heated arguments, with the BDO engaging in verbal disputes with the local representatives.
The panchayat leaders allege that since Debnath assumed office, development work has been paralyzed. They claim he has bypassed communication with elected representatives and carried out projects unilaterally, without consulting either the panchayat leadership or the local MLA. They further accuse him of failing to convene mandatory standing committee meetings, which are supposed to be held monthly.
In response, BDO Debnath dismissed the allegations as baseless, insisting that development activities are continuing simultaneously across all panchayats under his jurisdiction. He maintained that his administration is following government rules and procedures.
The confrontation has now drawn the attention of district authorities, with villagers and panchayat leaders awaiting a possible investigation into the matter. The future of rural development in Amarpur may hinge on whether higher officials intervene to resolve the dispute.
