Special observers bats for strict actions against offenders during poll

Agartala: January 24. The three special observers who arrived in the poll bound state yesterday have held a meeting today with the civil and police administration of the state and directed them to take strict action against persons who will be found involved in unlawful activities during polls.

Today afternoon, they held meeting via video conferencing with District Magistrates and Superintendents of Police of the state’s eight districts.

The observers are Yogendra Tripathy, retired IAS officer of Karnataka cadre; Vivek Johri, former Director General of Police of Madhya Pradesh; and B. Murali Kumar, IRS officer, who was special observer in the Assembly elections of Gujarat (2022) and West Bengal (2021).

Besides the special observers, the EC has also appointed five other categories of observers including general, police, expenditure, micro and counting.

Sources from Chief Electoral Officer, said that today no such meetings were held but the officials have taken notes from all the concerned officials about the present scenario of the state.

“Today they talk with all the officials and took detailed notes about the present scenario of the state. From tomorrow they will meet District Magistrates and Superintendent of Polices one by one. They will visit each and every districts”, the official said.

For the Tripura poll so far around 200 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) officials were deployed in Tripura and more CAPF comprising Assam Rifles, Border Security Force, Central Reserve Police Force, Central Industrial Security Force companies are expected to arrive in the state.

The official further said that the special observers who have arrived in Tripura have reviewed the poll preparedness.

“During the meeting district wise detailed report they gathered and directed the officials to take strict actions against any persons who will be engaged with unlawful activities. The officials have also directed to intensify the security and checking along with naka points across the state”, he said.

The official further informed that the special observes have laid special emphasis on the Zero poll violence and asked the officials to take strict and stringent steps.

During the meeting Chief Secretary JK Sinha, CEO Kiran Gitte, DGP Amitabh Ranjan, DIGs, IGs and officials of BSF, CRPF, CISF and other agencies were present.
