Agartala, December 12: A Tripura State Rifles (TSR) constable, who shot dead two of his colleagues over a leave dispute in 2021, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a local court on Tuesday. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the convict, Sukanta Das, and awarded him an additional one year of imprisonment for escaping from the crime scene.

The incident took place on December 4, 2021, at Konabon GCS Point. Das, who was denied leave by his seniors, opened fire with his rifle at two of them, killing them on the spot. The victims were identified as Habildar Naik Subedhar Marka Singh Jamatia and Nayak Subedar Kiran Kumar Jamatia.

Das fled from the spot with his weapon and surrendered at the Madhupur police station, where he was arrested and booked under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder. He was later sent to judicial custody by the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court.

The case was investigated by Subhrajit Deb, who filed the charge sheet after recording the statements of 38 witnesses. The trial was conducted by Bishalgarh Additional Sessions Judge Debashish Kar, who pronounced the verdict after hearing both the prosecution and the defence.

The families of the slain jawans expressed relief and satisfaction over the judgment, saying that justice had been done after a long wait. They said that the life sentence would give them some solace for their loss.

Meanwhile, the TSR Commandant Ranga Dulal Debbarma urged all the jawans to perform their duties with dedication and respect, and to avoid any conflicts or violence among themselves.
