Agartala, 7th June 2026: A colourful district-level programme was organised at the Unakoti District Sports Complex on Sunday morning to celebrate World Bicycle Day, spreading the message of health, environmental conservation, and sustainable living. The event was organised by the Unakoti District Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS) Department and witnessed enthusiastic participation from athletes, youth, and cycling enthusiasts of different age groups.
The programme, which began at 6:30 am under the theme “Pedal for a Sustainable Future,” was inaugurated with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Sports Minister Tinku Roy in the presence of Kailashahar Municipal Council Chairperson Chapala Debroy, State Waqf Board Chairperson Mabaswar Ali, Sports Department official Amit Yadav, Zilla Parishad member Shyamal Das, and other distinguished guests.
Addressing the gathering, Minister Tinku Roy highlighted the significance of cycling in promoting a healthy lifestyle and protecting the environment. Referring to the “Sunday on Cycle” initiative launched by Union Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, he urged people to use bicycles instead of motorised vehicles at least once a week.
“Regular cycling helps prevent lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart ailments, and obesity, while also reducing mental stress and improving productivity. Moreover, cycling produces no carbon emissions and contributes significantly to environmental protection,” Roy said.
The participants pledged to promote eco-friendly transportation and raise awareness about fuel conservation and pollution control. The Minister also encouraged families, friends, and neighbours to adopt the habit of cycling every Sunday to build a healthier and more environmentally conscious society.
As part of the programme, Roy planted a sapling at the Sports Complex before joining nearly 100 cycling enthusiasts in a bicycle rally. The rally commenced from the District Sports Complex and passed through the Kailashahar Old Motor Stand before reaching Durgapur.
The event received an enthusiastic response from local residents, who expressed hope that such initiatives would further strengthen public awareness about healthy living, environmental conservation, and sustainable transportation.
