Agartala, 8th November 2025: While the state government continues to trumpet its development agenda, ground realities in Brahmachhara village tell a different story. A long-awaited road repair project in the agriculturally vital region of the Teliamura RD Block has come to a standstill following alleged political interference by local BJP workers.
The controversy erupted on Friday when nearly 20 BJP workers from the Krishnapur Mandal reportedly arrived on motorcycles and ordered the immediate suspension of the roadwork. Their demand: the contractor must first report to the Mandal office and await further instructions before resuming any work. Without such clearance, they warned, the project would remain halted.
The road in question connecting the Bengali Para near the Brahmachhara agricultural farm has been neglected since the Left Front era, despite repeated pleas from villagers. Recently, the BJP-led government sanctioned ₹1.2 crore for the metalling and carpeting of a 1.5-kilometer stretch, appointing a contractor to execute the work. The initiative was seen as a long-overdue response to the villagers’ persistent demands.
However, the sudden intervention by party workers has sparked outrage among residents. “This road is not just a path, it’s our lifeline,” said one villager. “We will not tolerate political complications in government development work.” Locals recalled how, during monsoons, transporting crops to market was nearly impossible due to the road’s poor condition. Years ago, they had even pooled ₹600 per household to temporarily restore the road with soil.
Local farmers expressed frustration over the situation. “We voted for development, yet we had to spend from our own pockets to fix the road. Now that funds have been allocated and work has begun, why are party workers interfering?” one farmer asked. According to some administrative officials, such disruptions not only slow down development but also sow confusion among the public.
Sources indicate that villagers plan to file a formal complaint against the alleged obstructionists, demanding the resumption of work and an end to political meddling. A senior resident summed up the sentiment: “We’re not against any party, but we won’t accept obstacles in the name of development. This road is tied to our survival it’s a public issue, not a political one.”
