Agartala, 14th May 2024 : The capital’s motor stand area was engulfed in chaos as allegations of unauthorized subscription collection surfaced. Three individuals were detained by the East Agartala police following a confrontation involving e-rickshaw workers.
For approximately two weeks, e-rickshaw operators have reported extortion by outsiders demanding a “labor fund” fee of INR 570, threatening to bar vehicles from the stand upon non-payment. The legitimacy of these collections has been questioned due to the absence of official endorsements on the provided coupons.
Long-standing workers have expressed skepticism, citing a history of similar incidents spanning over two decades. The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is under scrutiny for its annual collection of INR 120 crore from laborers, raising concerns about the transparency of these transactions.
The situation escalated on Tuesday when Suman, Dipankar, and Sudeep were apprehended by the workers while allegedly coercing toll payments. The accused were subsequently handed over to the authorities at the East Agartala police station.
The e-rickshaw community has urged for a thorough investigation into the incident and appropriate legal action against those found guilty of exploitation.
