Agartala, 18th January 2025: Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha met Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday, raising concerns about an illegal dam being constructed by Bangladesh along the Kailashahar border in Tripura. Dr. Saha submitted a detailed letter highlighting the potential threats posed by the dam, urging immediate action.
The contentious dam, located near the zero point of the India-Bangladesh border in Devipur, Sylhet Division, is reportedly being built in violation of international norms. It is adjacent to an Indian dam constructed 40 years ago along the Manu River. The new Bangladeshi dam, however, is being built higher and wider, raising fears of severe flooding in Kailashahar during the upcoming monsoon season.
Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma, Additional District Magistrate Argha Saha, and a team inspected the site on January 17. Chakma stated, “The construction is entirely illegal and dangerously close to the zero point. Such activity cannot proceed without adhering to guidelines.”
Dr. Saha expressed his concern, stating, “This illegal construction endangers Kailashahar. I have apprised the Home Minister of the situation, and we expect swift action to safeguard our people.”
The state government has emphasized vigilance to mitigate potential risks.
