Agartala, 26th April 2025: In a deeply tragic incident, a young housewife named Monika Shuklabaidya from Ward No. 6 of Gobindapur under Churaibari police station allegedly took her own life after facing allegedly domestic abuse for not giving dowry.
The deceased was married to Shanku Shuklabaidya of Bhagyapur village, Kailashahar, in 2023, following social customs.
According to the family members, three months into the marriage, Monika faced physical and mental torture at the hands of her husband, Shanku — a soldier in the Indian Army — along with her father-in-law Shashadhar and mother-in-law Mukta Shuklabaidya. She was reportedly pressured to bring Rs 2 lakh from her paternal home, and faced escalating cruelty when she failed to meet their demands.
Monika later became pregnant but could not endure the constant harassment and sought refuge at her father’s home, where she gave birth to a son.
Despite multiple arbitration meetings led by community elders, where Monika was sent back to her marital home, the situation reportedly worsened. Allegations have surfaced that Shanku was involved in multiple extramarital affairs and would physically assault Monika whenever she protested after finding obscene content on his phone.
After months of separation, Shanku returned to Gobindapur on April 18 and allegedly assaulted Monika again.
She had reportedly recorded the assault on her phone. Humiliated and distressed, Monika left her father’s home on Friday night and allegedly ended her life by jumping in front of a moving train.
The Railway Police recovered her body today morning and sent it for autopsy at Dharmanagar District Hospital. Monika leaves behind a two-year-old son.
Her mother, Mira Shuklabaidya, has filed a written complaint at Churaibari Police Station, demanding strict action against the accused. The police have launched an investigation based on the complaint.
The tragic death has sparked outrage in the local community, with many calling for justice for Monika.
