Agartala, 12th June 2026: Kailashahar-Rangauti Road, a crucial route in the northern part of Kailashahar, has once again drawn public concern over its deteriorating condition despite the expenditure of several crore rupees under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
The 7-kilometre road stretch was constructed by a prominent state-based contracting firm before the 2023 Assembly elections. Locals alleged that the work was completed in haste ahead of the polls, resulting in poor-quality construction. According to residents, excessive sand was used in the road mixture instead of adequate stone material, causing the surface to weaken rapidly. Even minor rainfall reportedly leads to pothole formation and further damage.
The road from Dakbungalow to Rangauti, including stretches between Kubjhar, Tilabazar and Rangauti, has now developed numerous potholes, making daily travel difficult. Hundreds of vehicles, including auto-rickshaws, rickshaws, two-wheelers and heavy vehicles, depend on this route every day.
Although the contractor has carried out repairs twice after repeated complaints and media reports, locals said the road returns to a damaged state within a few months. As per the contract, maintenance responsibility remains with the contractor for five years.
Frustrated residents have urged the authorities to take immediate steps for permanent repair and ensure better quality road construction to prevent repeated public inconvenience.
