Agartala, 25th January 2025: Department of Bengali and Education of MMD College, Sabroom jointly in association with alumni association of the college celebrated the 201st birth anniversary of one of the greatest Bengali poets and dramatists of the nineteenth century, Michael Madhusudan Datta with due majesty. Dr. Anupam Guha, Principal along with professors and alumni president Goutam Tripura, other members of alumni and students paid their homage to the poet’s bust.
Madhusudan Datta is regarded as one of the leading figures in the Bengali literature, was a pioneering poet and play writer who significantly transformed the landscape of Bengali poetry by introducing Western literary forms like sonnets and blank verse, while weaving Indian themes and mythology into his works, most notably through his epic poem “Meghnah Badh Kavya”, which lined his legacy as a literary genius who linked the gap between traditional and modern Bengali writing.
Supriya Mog, departmental head of Bengali said about the personal life of poet that he had a firm belief on his ‘larger than life’ concept, as he was insolvent, had no idea about savings and expenditures. He had a bottomless adore for English and wanted to be an Englishman mentality. His life was full of delight and at the end full of pungent mishap.
Dr. Prabir Bhowmik, Assistant Professor of Education Department uttered about the creation of various epic poems and told that he would be always remembered in the paradigm of Bengali Literature for his ‘Blank Verse or Amitrakshar Chanda’ and appeals to the students to read his literature.
Dr. Anupam Guha said that the poet’s life was full of impeccable talent, though, the ancestral property could not meet the extravagant Madhusudan’s needs. He told the students about the poet’s literary lesson. He said that naming the college as Michael Madhusudan Dutta College worthwhile only if you are inspired by the poet’s memory and life. Reflection is the key to social development. On behalf of the college alumni, Sajal Nath talked about the relevance of the poet’s life practice as well as realizing it in the present day. Students perform fascinating cultural programs. The program concluded with the national anthem.
